An Introduction to the JLPT

What is the JLPT?
The JLPT is essentially a language test that students of Japanese language can take to officially gauge their skill level. You can view the official JLPT website here.

Why consider taking the JLPT?
Taking the JLPT can be useful in a few ways. Firstly, it can provide you with a standardized grading of your overall Japanese proficiency level, for your own personal satisfaction. Secondly, if looking at a job overseas, a company may require a certain level of Japanese language proficiency. It can also be useful to put on any resume, as the test is recognized worldwide, and there for is a well-respected, official measure of ability.

What are the costs of taking the test?
The test costs $70.00 CAD and payment is done online, when you register for the tests, months before the test date. If you miss the test for whatever reason, there is no refund, so do your best to stay in perfect health nearing the exam.

When are the tests held?
Tests are held twice a year, every year, on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. Consider these dates carefully as there are no alternative times to write them. Ensure that whichever date you choose you will have ample time to prepare and that there will not be many stressful activities happening at that time, for example, exams for classes. If you usually travel around the test dates, plan ahead of time and try to book your journey for after the test, rather than before.

Deciding what level of the test is best for you.
There are 5 levels of tests: N5, N4, N3, N2, and N1. N5 is the lowest, or most basic level, while N1 represents a strong fluency in the language. A general summary of what is required knowledge for each level can be found here.
